There are many different kinds of dog collars on the market that are available for you to buy. There are so many, in fact, that it can get a little confusing. What do you want to buy? A pinch collar, an adjustable nylon collar, a regular leather buckle? There are so many choices that it can make your head spin!!

Martingale collars are a special kind of dog collar & are starting to gain popularity with the general population of dog owners. They have other names like; safety collar, greyhound collar, humane choke collar, training collar, hound collar or limited slip collar. How a martingale collar works, is to tighten up around a dogs neck while giving greater control to the handler. This is done by a loop system that tightens around the dogs neck when it puts tension on the leash. It reduces the risk of a dog "backing out" of it's collar and escaping, which is important with dogs like Salukis, Greyhounds and Whippets, since the circumference of their heads is smaller than their necks.

Fitting a martingale collar to your dog is especially important. If the collar is too loose, it will not tighten up as it is supposed to & your dog could escape from it's collar. To measure your dog for a proper fit you must measure the dogs neck right behind the ears. Since most martingale collars come with an adjustable feature, choose a collar that offers a size that comfortably fits between the measurements that you have just taken.

If you want to use a martingale collar for training your dog, it is best to buy a nylon one that has a chain loop. This will give you greater control over your dog & not be as harsh as a regular choke chain collar. If you want to 'show off' your dog, there are many collar makers that make beautiful collars from colourful ribbons & fabrics. The choices are endless & you will make yourself dizzy just trying to pick the right one.

An important note about martingale collars as since they do have a loop, your dog should never be left unattended while wearing one. It could snag on something & hurt your dog.
